Why does our hair have to fall out after having a baby? I mean haven't we already been through enough?! Well, yes, but postpartum hair loss is primarily attributed to hormonal fluctuations. Approximately 50-90% of women experience postpartum hair loss to some degree.


During pregnancy, hormonal changes create elevated estrogen levels causing an increase in hair growth and a decrease in hair shedding, so you won't notice much hair falling out before delivery. However, after childbirth, estrogen levels drop and hormone levels return to normal, leading to a shedding phase where hair that would have normally fallen out during pregnancy is shed all at once. This can result in noticeable hair loss and it can feel like a lot. The good news is that it is temporary and typically resolves on its own. I've experiemented with many different shampoos and conditioners to help with postpartum hair loss. At one point I even tried a shampoo and conditioner set promising results for $100.00 (spoiler alert, I saw no noticable results). The good news is, the shampoo and conditioner sets that I have actually found helpful are much less expensive. It's great to look for shampoos containing ingredients like biotin, keratin, or plant extracts that can help strengthen and nourish the hair. Here are my favorites:

There are quite a few serums that promise results for hair loss. I've tried a few of those as well, but I've found that they've made my hair look oily and didn't actually help with hair regrowth. However, there is one that I have found results with that doesn't leave my hair looking greasy. I use these products after I wash my hair:



Postpartum Hair Loss Vitamins

Hair supplements containing biotin, vitamins (such as B-complex vitamins), and minerals (such as zinc and iron) may help support hair regrowth. It is recommended to continue taking your prenatal vitamin pills or prenatal vitamin gummies after giving birth, especially if you are breastfeeding. However, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplements.


Home Remedies for Postpartum Hair Loss

While home remedies may not provide a guaranteed solution for hair loss, some find them helpful in promoting hair health. Here are a few home remedies that you can try:


  • Scalp massage: Massaging your scalp can help improve blood circulation to the hair follicles, promoting hair growth. Use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp in circular motions for a few minutes each day.

  • Aloe vera: Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to your scalp and hair. Aloe vera has soothing properties and may help nourish the hair follicles.
